Sie denken, die akustische Wiedergabe eines Buches entspricht exakt der Literaturvorlage? Falsch – denn Fakt ist, dass es sich bei den meisten Hörbüchern um eine „Gekürzte Lesung“ handelt. Kein Wunder also, dass Verlage diesen Hinweis nur klein gedruckt auf der Rückseite ihrer Hörbücher platzieren. Was aber verbirgt sich hinter dieser bewusst sehr vage gehaltenen Information? Angelika Diehm wagt sich in ihrer innovativen Arbeit als erste Wissenschaftlerin an das unerforschte Gebiet der Hörbuchkürzung. Anhand eines Interviews mit Hörbuchbearbeiterin Ulla Mothes gelingt es ihr, das methodische Vorgehen bei einer Literaturkürzung darzustellen. Zudem liefert sie erstaunliche Erkenntnisse, dass etwa bei einer durchschnittlichen Kürzung 30 Prozent der Vorlage verlorengehen. Exemplarisch analysiert die Autorin die Auswirkung einer Kürzung an dem Bestseller „Chemie des Todes“ von Simon Beckett. Auch beleuchtet sie das Spannungsfeld zwischen Literaturwissenschaft und Hörbuch. Zwar hat sich das Hörbuch mit seinem Einzug in das Feuilleton Ende der 1990er Jahre innerhalb der Gesellschaft scheinbar etabliert, doch eine Auseinandersetzung seitens der Literaturwissenschaft hat bis heute kaum stattgefunden. Darüber hinaus setzt sich die Autorin mit Vor(ur)- und Nachteilen des Mediums auseinander und geht dabei sowohl auf die historische Entwicklung als auch auf Genres und unterschiedliche Definitionsansätze ein.
